    I’m in the US and I thought the yogurt and Lincoln jokes were pretty funny.

    1) In America, our yogurt has culture. It sounds like what you call “yogurt” is what normal people call “warm milk”.
    2) If you were to leave yogurt for 200 years, it would dry out within a matter of days, allowing little opportunity for a lasting culture to develop.
    3) Britain has had plenty of time to develop a culture. See Benny Hill and Page 3 girls. Keep it up, chums!

    Re Lincoln and civil rights. Lincoln was the candidate of the new Republican Party, founded primarily as an abolitionist party. It was because largely his election that provoked the secession of South Carolina. His “deep personal conviction” regarding slavery and abolition were not the result of circumstances you discussed they caused these circumstances.
