If you think the 24 hour day is confusing today it could be a lot worse: 1000 years ago you would have had 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night regardless of season, causing the amount of minutes in an hour to fluctuate widely over the course of the year. Presumably this 12/12 division lies at the heart of why we have the AM/PM system (and, consequently, why sundials only went up to 12)
