Skeptics in the Pub: Chris French

Haunted houses, telepathy and UFOs: Investigating the extraordinary

by Chris French
When: Thursday, April 21, 2011 8.00 – 11.00 PM
Where: The Head of Steam, 7 Lime Street, Liverpool

Over the last decade, the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit of Goldsmiths University has investigated a wide range of weird and wonderful topics, including alien contact experiences, sleep paralysis, haunted houses, dowsing, and telepathy. Many paranormal claims have been scientifically tested under properly controlled conditions along the way. This overview by Professor Chris French will present some of the results of such investigations.

Do you record these talks? So many sound intriguing but cost prevents me from popping over from California to attend (but oh how I wish…). Shitty sound with pub noise is fine.

There may be a way. However I would have to clear this with Professor French and Mike Hall. Actually I was hoping to ‘pop over’ to San Diego next week but my plans have been halted due to a late funding problem (bugger!). And I am only off work for this week and next week. So it looks like the money will be spent on double glazing.

Even if it was only for future events (where the speaker would presumably at hand to ask) it would be great. Strangely enough, there doesn’t appear to be that many events like the above here in the Bay Area, at least not in the south bay. Maybe wee have too low a woo to provoke an autoimmune response.

Johan, even though I live quite close, I agree with you it would be brilliant to have copies of the talks. There is a Skeptics in The Pub podcast – which I’ve ended up deleting – but it didn’t compare, in my opinion, with hearing the actual talks.

Micheal, is there any update on this?

Not at the moment. I recorded the first part of Chris’s talk last night. You dont get to see the slides, but that doesn’t detract from his talk. It was very good as usual and we were his Guinea Pigs for this new talk. I recorded it on a mini DV recorder as a colleague is borrowing my Xacti camera I usually use. You can email me and I will send it as an attachment for you to see but not pass on. If you wish.
