Posted by Marsh in Skepticism on August 15, 2013
Taking a break from our usual events, the Merseyside Skeptics Society would like to invite you to join us for an evening of political comedy.
When: Thursday, September 12th, 2013 8.00 – 11.00 PM
Where: The Head of Steam, 7 Lime Street, Liverpool
Tickets: £3 (tickets available on the door)
Chris Coltrane: Compassion Is Subversive
Friend of the MSS Chris Coltrane brings his Edinburgh Festival show to Liverpool. In Compassion Is Subversive, Coltrane asks: when did supporting libraries and playgrounds become a radical act? It seems that even simply being kind is a hard-left ideal nowadays! How did it come to this? Why is the government trying to make us hate each other? Chris intends to find out, using stand-up comedy and hardcore joy.
Along the way, he demolishes austerity, champions public services and takes tax dodgers like Starbucks to task. He exposes right-wing homophobia over equal marriage. He shows how both Labour and the Tories lie and peddle hate to get votes – and he tells stories from the front-line of activism, to inspire us to fight back.
Chris has appeared at QED – run jointly by the Merseyside Skeptics Society – is a member of the anti-cuts group UK Uncut, who take direct action against tax-dodgers like Vodafone and Top Shop. He has turned Barclays Bank, Soho Square and Westminster Bridge into spontaneous free comedy clubs, where over 500 protesters came to occupy and fight austerity with laughter, and has even presented an award to George Osborne when he was voted “Top Tax Shirker” by members of the PCS Union.
Tiernan Douieb
What do you think about opinions? Tiernan has some but it seems pretty much everyone else does too and can’t wait to shout them at him. A new hour from Douieb about the internet being too loud, politics, spiders and Sigur Ros. Tiernan is one of the UK’s most sought after comedy hosts, his fun and friendly style of comedy has seen him perform all over the UK and internationally.
Cited by Mark Thomas in the Guardian as a comedian to look out for, Tiernan has performed at various marches & demos including the Occupy LSX camp, the TUC March and Westminster Bridge for the Save The NHS protest.

Boots To Launch Own-Brand ‘Chocolate Teapot’ Range
Posted by Marsh in 10:23, Homeopathy, Skepticism on January 14, 2010
As part of The 10:23 Campaign, the excellent satirical news site NewsArse.com asked if there was anything we’d like to pen on homeopathy and Boots. Ever the media whore, I duly obliged… full text below. Check out NewsArse.com for more fantastic satirical offerings, too.
Boots To Launch Own-Brand ‘Chocolate Teapot’ Range
High-street giants Boots came under scrutiny once more this week after unveiling plans for their own-brand range of teapots crafted from delicious milk chocolate.
The pharmacy – who hit the headlines last month by admitting they sell completely ineffective homeopathic remedies simply because people are willing to buy them – announced the new chocolate teapots as the latest release in their line of alternative crockery.
Boots’ Professional Standards Director Paul Bennett told reporters, “Our strategy is simply, if people are gonna buy this stuff, then we’re damn sure gonna sell it.”
“Its effectiveness as a product is obviously secondary concern when compared to people’s willingness to give us money for it.”
“We’re committed to offering a wide range of choice to our customers, and if anyone chooses to be stupid enough to pay good money for a teapot made of chocolate, then it’s our duty to take that money from them.” Read the rest of this entry »
