Skeptics with a K: The 2-year Anniversary Live Show

I’m sure we can all remember the momentous events of August 1st, 2009.

  • The Pope announced plans to release his first album (a trance-inspired collection of old-school anthems and breaking new beats, with pumping anti-abortion, pro-child-abuse, pro-men-in-dresses-condemning-homosexuality basslines).
  • The Quaker church agreed to begin performing same-sex marriages (sparking a trigger-happy rampage in which 10 Quaker ministers went on a same-sex-marrying spree, leaving six innocent bystanders legally tied, and wedding the entire QPR first team in a complicated polygamous tryst, which ironically boosted team spirits so much they achieved promotion to the top division the following season).
  • And, perhaps most importantly of all, three men and a microphone (in a somewhat disappointing prequel to the 80s classic movie) gathered in a dinosaur-wallpapered bedroom to talk pithy nonsense. Those three men went on to become joint Time magazine ‘Man of the year’ for 2047, controversially beating newly-elected US president Justin Bieber after a hideous accident left them fused at the hip and legally classified as a single entity. But back in 2011, they were three separate, discrete and clearly-defined individuals, with a podcast and a giant book of nonsense.

And so, for the second time ever, you can catch these men live, unedited and wildly-underprepared in their hastily-thrown-together second anniversary live show.

To catch the live 52nd episode of Skeptics with a K live video feed simply visit after 6.45pm TONIGHT. Plus you can join in the show with heckling and insults via the Twitter hashtag #SwaKlive. See you there!

Skeptics with a K: The Drinking Game

Skeptics with a K listener Niki M writes:

So, I’ve been catching up on the 36 episodes that are up right now, and I’ve noticed a few trends, enough so that I got this lame brained idea that it would make an interesting drinking game. So, put up your feet, grab your favorite beverage of choice*, and let’s have a go!

As a fan of Withnail and I, I love drinking games. As a teetotaller, I rarely play them. What better compromise than to have a drinking game based around me and my mates? Hurray! So, for your enjoyment, we present Niki M’s Skeptics with a K Drinking Game

Skeptics with a K: listen live online with QED

This Monday will see a very special recording of our Skeptics with a K podcast. For the first, and perhaps only time in the show’s history, we will be streaming the recording session live over the Internet.

Skeptics with a K Live is being sponsored by the QED conference (get your tickets now) who will be providing technical support on the day.   Listeners will be able to hear the raw, uncut recording – as it happens – including all the grossly offensive off-colour humour which usually gets cut for reasons of taste and decency.

Not only that, you will be able to interact with the show via twitter. During the show we will be monitoring the #qedcon hashtag, so when Marsh says something outrageous about palladium you can put him right on the spot.

The show starts at 6:45pm on Monday, December 13 – at

Skeptics with a K: The Inside Story

Interview with Marsh on The Skeptical Review

Interview with Marsh on The Skeptical Review

Never one for self-promotion (*cough cough cough cough*), I have to admit to being flattered when, last week, I got an interview request from charming podcaster-type Karl Mamer, of the Conspiracy Skeptic podcast. Karl, alongside being an experience podcaster and generally dapper individual, is also something called a ‘Canadian’.

Now, being from this sceptred, splendid, God’s-own isle I’d previously never spoken to a Canadian – let alone ever been to Canadia – but seeing as outreach is one the stated goals in the MSS constitution (it’s amendment #3 right after the rule stating everyone has to have bare right arms, and right before the allowance of members to search for people having seizures), so I figured I’d give it a whirl. Still, forewarned is forearmed, so I thought it worth finding out a little more about this ‘Canadia’ place, before I allowed myself to be thrown to the mooses.

  • The archaic name of the country originally started with a silent ‘o’, however the land is only ever referred to as ‘Ocanada’ during the singing of the national anthem
  • The country has a fine heritage of cultural exports, including puppet ‘Ed The Sock‘, health activist Jim Carrey, and long-established comedy duo Terrence and Philip – who are often likened to our very own venerable Morecambe and Wise
  • We used to frickin’ own it! When the global economy crashed in 1931, the mortgage payments got too high, and Britain officially pawned Canada to some local lumberjacks. To this very day, the Queen’s name remains on the deeds, forcing proud Canadians to accept her as their great and glorious leader
  • Uber-skeptic James Randi was once Canadian, until an incident involving Alice Cooper and some Mounties while touring. Sometimes what happens on tour, doesn’t stay on tour, I guess
  • Current Prime Minister of Canada is Steve Harper, who supplements his wage by also playing goalkeeper for Newcastle United FC
  • Canadians don’t understand football, and they call it soccer, or soccerball, or goalsphere
  • It is the law that everything in Canada is written in both English AND in French / C’est la loi que chaque phrase ecrit en Canada est ecrit en Anglaise ET en Francais

Thus is the fruits of my Googling, and armed thus I ‘met’ with said Mr Mamer to thrash out an interview. Stylishly attired in a lumberjack shirt and matching hockey blades, Karl and I chatted about all things Skeptics-with-a-K-sy, while enjoying lashings of maple syrup and partaking in some customary transatlantic stereotyping.

Should you so wish, you can read the interview in full on The Skeptical Review website.

Liverpool Skeptics In The Pub: One Year Anniversary Bonanza

One Year Anniversary Bonanza at The Vines

It’s hard to believe, but come the end of this Month, the Merseyside Skeptics Society will have been going for just over a year. In that space of time we have gone from not existing at all, to hosting regular social events in Liverpool City Centre (at Doctor Duncan’s pub, for those interested), hosting regular Skeptics In The Pub nights with speakers such as Ariane Sherine, Chris French and Simon Singh, and to masterminding the 10:23 campaign, which went from strength to strength, spreading from Liverpool to other cities across England, Wales and Scotland, and then to numerous countries across the world! Amid all this we’ve also somehow managed to produce two popular podcasts, Skeptics With a K and InKredulous, and get name-checked in everything from the Pod Delusion and The Skeptic Zone to The Independent and The Guardian. Not to mention you could hear Mike and Marsh’s dulcet tones gracing the airwaves on more than one occasion, arguing with UFO enthusiasts, psychics and homeopaths to name but a few. You can also hear Marsh on the podcast Righteous Indignation.

It’s been overwhelming. So overwhelming that we almost forgot it had been a year since we started. When we did notice, we realised we should do something to celebrate this personal milestone, and so we organised a special Liverpool Skeptics In The Pub: One Year Anniversary Bonanza!
